And the town of Seki, where the factory is located, is famous for its unique and traditional blacksmithing techniques, which date back more than 700 years. history.
It dates back to the Kamakura era (1185-1333), when a famous sword maker Motoshige moved to Seki and began forging his own swords and teaching others the craft. Seki was surrounded by large pine forests, where blacksmiths could obtain the charcoal they needed, and there was also good water, making Seki a suitable place for sword making. Over time, the number of craftsmen increased and more than 300 blacksmiths lived here and produced the finest samurai swords of the Muromachi era (1336-1573). Seki then flourished as a centre for samurai sword making and became known throughout Japan.
After the Haitorei Sword Ban Act (1876), which was passed in the Meiji period, the demand for swords declined significantly, but the craftsmen perfected blacksmithing skills were applied to to the manufacture of knives and agricultural implements. Even today, Seki and its surroundings are known as one of the most famous knife-making areas in the world. Kitchen knives made here account for more than 50% of the Japanese market and are valued for the highest quality standards.
